hello!
my name is Kylie, nice to meet you :)
I started doing ceramics when I was a gardener for a family that ran a private studio in their house. They not only taught me to be unabashedly creative, but also how healing working with clay can Be! ever since then, i’ve fallen in love with the process of forming something from my own hands and sharing it with others.
I’m originally from a small town in the colorado rockies, but since then, my husband and I have made the move to the nwa area. we love all things outdoors, from mountain biking, to rock climbing, and everything in between! we have a myriad of hobbies between the two of us, so chances are if you see us out and about, we’re probably jamming on the guitar or dreaming up some new projects.
mellemar’s namesake
mellemar is named after my three cats, Melly, Leon, and Marmot! Their full names are Melanzana, L.L. Bean, and Marmot, so if you didn’t know i was outdoorsy and cat crazy before, you sure do now :)
When I was dreaming up ideas of what to name this venture, i kept coming back to what fuels my soul - a deep fondness and connection to earth’s creatures and their wordless love. it only felt right to pay homage to the ones that have made their home in my heart!
maker’s mark
our maker’s mark is quite literally handmade - it’s my hand! I wanted every part of mellemar to be profoundly personal and intentional, down to the smallest detail.
the process
the process begins with music - i always find my best inspiration while playing the guitar. from there, an idea is born and taken into the studio!
from there, i throw the piece, throubleshoot any snags, and trim it up for the kiln.
once the piece is out of its first fire, it’s onto glazing! this is where we can really get creative and play with different designs and colors.
once it’s all glazed and fired once more, it’s ready to go home to you! This process typically takes about 2-3 weeks, especially because i fire in a community kiln, so I’m at the will of whoever is currently loading it.
